Coconut Shell Flour is made from the most versatile part of the coconut – the shell which is organic in nature. Since it has good durability characteristics, high toughness and abrasion resistant properties, it is suitable for long standing use. The shell is similar to hard woods in chemical composition though lignin content is higher and cellulose content is lower.
To manufacture coconut shell flour, the shells of fully matured nuts are first cleaned of the adhering pithy matter and broken down into small pieces. These pieces are then subjected to repeated grinding in grinding mills and the ground mass, after passing through cyclones and vibratory sieves fitted with phosphor-bronze mesh, are finally drawn out in different mesh sizes.

Coconut Shell Flour
The manufacturing of the coconut shell flour are manufactured through various stages in order to have quality coconut shell flour. Firstly, the coconut shells are kept at the drying yard for drying and it goes through a granulator to make it granule. Then from granulator it goes through to the polishing system to remove the excess fibre and foreign particles. The polished shells are then crushed in the hammermill machine and goes through to the pulverizer where it becomes as the coconut shell flour. Through the process, there are not added any other substance and thus it is considered as organic, heavy metal free and chemical free.

- Coconut shell flour is extensively used as a compound filler for synthetic resin glues as a filler and extender for phenolic moulding powders.
- Used successfully with specialized surface finishing liquid products (as an absorbent), mastic adhesives, resin casting and bituminous products.
- Used in heavy duty hand cleaner pastes as a mild abrasive.
- It can give a smooth and lustrous finish to molded articles, and also improves their resistance to moisture and heat. In a Granular form it is used as a Lost Circulation Material in Oil Well Drilling.
- Used as a mild abrasive in shot blasting of delicate objects and of historic buildings.
- In Asia, it is widely used for the manufacture of insect repellent in the form of mosquito coils.
